Coihaique to Chile Chico
After four days in Coihaique waiting for the snow to clear off the roads it was time to get to Puerto Ingeniero to catch the car ferry across Lago General Carrera to Chile Chico and the start of the infamous Ruta 40.
The day started fine but soon turned to rain and wind. After a wrong turn and ending up at a remote border crosssing into Argentina it was a back track onto the right route. No two maps over here have the same information so at times it can be confusing.
By the time we arrived at Puerto Ingeniero it was pelting down. The ferry was not running as the lake was too rough so we needed to find a place to stay that was warm and dry. To the rescue came the ferry Captain who told us where to buy our tickets for the next day and I followed him on the bike as he took us to the towns hostal. Another of those moments.
Warm, dry, fed and watered we settled in for the night with two young cyclists, Phil and Joyce from the UK who were also making the crossing. Cycling in this environment with the changeable weather would have to be one of the most challenging things to undertake and they had come down from Peru as well.
Next day was warm and fine with a flat crossing to Chile Chico. Once across it was off to the border crossing and into Argentina.
